Help is available for you to reduce your energy costs for both your farm and farm residence in the form of:

Incentives up to 75% of the total project cost, not to exceed $12,000. Farmer can use up to $3,000 of the $12,000 cost share to use towards the farm residence

Loans up to $50,000 available for a 10 year term, or the life of equipment, whichever comes first

Goals of MAESTRO?

MAESTRO has two main goals: to conserve energy and stimulate the economy.

Conserve Energy – Motors, pumps and heating systems from 20 years ago are no longer at their peak performance. We plan to reduce the energy footprint of 250 livestock farms across the state. While doing so, we hope to educate farmers about the benefits and value of the MAESTRO program.
Stimulate Economy – With the installation of the energy efficient equipment we will be stimulating the economy; more jobs are needed to manufacture these products and more jobs will be needed to maintain these products. As a secondary effect, improved health of the herd/flock will help to strengthen the farm business.

The MAESTRO program offers qualifying livestock operations:

Incentives up to 75% of the total project cost, not to exceed $12,000. Farmer can use up to $3,000 of the $12,000 cost share to use towards the farm residence
Comprehensive energy audits for the farm and farm residence
Rebates for audit cost once equipment is installed (energy saving practices must save at least 15 % of pre-upgrade energy use)
Loan interest rate buy-down to 3% or equivalent amount in a cash down payment
75% loan loss reserve program

Sample Dairy Energy Audit

“Inside this report I have identified several opportunities for you to reduce your energy bills by installing energy-efficient equipment and making other operational changes.

…You may be eligible for federal, state and local tax credits, and grants and loans through the USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), if you choose to implement the measures recommended in this report.”

Significant Findings

The dairy facility at Sample Dairy is approximately 30 years old and was equipped with some energy efficient technologies at the time of our visit. This report focuses on the remaining opportunities at Sample Dairy for the installation of energy efficient equipment and has identified the potential for approximately $9,822 in annual energy cost savings, if all the of the recommended equipment is installed. This represents about 30% of the baseline energy costs of $33,249. Dollar value of energy saving will vary depending on your utility rates.
